Cation exchanger

   Cation exchanger is also called cation bed. It can be divided into hydrogen type and sodium type according to the medicament for resin regeneration; sodium-type cation exchanger is known as softener or na-ion exchanger. When the raw water undergoes exchange reaction via the cation bed, the effluent shows acid, i.e. the cations in water have almost turned into hydrogen ion in equivalence. At that time, H++HC03-→C02↑+H2O. Therefore, carbon dioxide removal device (decarbonization tower) should be set at the rear end of the cation bed.
 
    Cation exchanger is the commonest desalination equipment in water treatment. Based on the ion selectivity and balanced reaction principles of cation and anion exchange resin, the H+ and OH- adsorbed on the resin surface have replacement reaction with cation in water, removing soluble ion in water.
 
    When raw water enters cation exchanger with H cation exchange resin, various cations contained in water will react with H+ in ion exchange resin as follows:
     Fe3++3HR-→FeR+3H+      Ca2++2HR-→CaR+2H+
     Mg2++2HR-→MgR+2H+      Na++HR-→Na+H+
 
    The conclusion of the above reactions is that various cations contained in water (Fe3+, Ca2+, Mg2+ and Na+) are adsorbed on the ion exchange resin while H+ in ion exchange resin reacts with sorts of anions in water, generating acids.
 
    For example: H2SO4  H2CO3  HCI  H2SiO3
 
    Thus it can be seen that after cation-anion exchange, ions in water can almost be removed. Generally speaking, over 99% of saltness in water can be removed.
 
    Cation exchanger is mainly used in preprocessing or post-processing of pure water treatment equipment such as boiler, thermal power plant, chemical engineering, light industry, medicine, biology, electronics and nuclear power, hard water softening and deionized water preparation for industrial production. Moreover, it can be applied in decoloration purification of food and medicine, recycling of precious metal and chemical materials.
