Reverse Osmosis

The membrane permeating only solvent but not solute usually is referred to as semopermeable membrane. Place semopermeable membrane between two solutions of different concentrations. Under equal temperature, and analyzed from the perspective of thermodynamic equilibrium, it should be that the solvent passes through the semopermeable membrane and gradually transfers to the part with lower chemical potential. This phenomenon is called as osmosis.
 
Definition of permeation: one solvent (water) enters into another solvent through semopermeable membrane, or solvent (water) permeate from one thinner solution to another thicker solution. It is called as osmosis.
 
Apply proper pressure to the thicker solution to stop the osmosis and realize osmosis balance. The pressure stopping pure water permeating into thicker solution is called as the osmotic pressure of the thicker solution.
 
Applying pressure higher than the natural osmotic pressure to the thicker solution can turn the natural osmosis direction and permeate the solvent (water) in the thicker solution into the thinner solution at the other side of the semopermeable membrane. The process opposite to the natural osmosis is called as reverse osmosis. It indicates that when the pressure applied to the side of brine is higher than the osmotic pressure of the brine, we can use the semopermeable membrane device to get fresh water from brine.
